Get Involved!
Volunteers are essential to accomplishing SAReads mission of having every third grader in Bexar County reading at or above grade level. Without the participation of community-minded citizens like you, our program would not exist. The efforts of tutors make a huge contribution to students’ success.
Becoming a Tutor
Tutors complete a two-hour training covering the reading curriculum. Per school district requirements, volunteers must complete a short application process and submit to a criminal background check. Tutors are then placed at a school that is conveniently located near their home, place of business or school. Tutors also decide which day and time works best with their schedules.
Each tutor commits to giving one hour a week, which is then divided between two students. If you are interested in helping a child achieve grade-level literacy by becoming a tutor, please click here.
Other Ways to Partner with SAReads
We’re aware that schedules don’t always permit someone to serve as a Tutor. If you cannot serve as a tutor, there are several other ways you can make a contribution to the cause of literacy in our city.
Make a Donation to SAReads
If you wish to make an online donation to SAReads, please click here. To make a donation via phone, or if we may answer any questions you have with regard to how your donation will be utilized, please call us at (210) 957-8790.
Donate to the SAReads Book Drive
Studies have repeatedly shown that the physical presence of books in the home makes a significant difference in children’s literacy levels. To help make books in the home a reality for needy students in Bexar County, SAReads partners with Firstmark Credit Union to collect new and gently used books for distribution in the community. Help Spread the Word
As a non-profit that draws volunteers from within our community, SAReads appreciates the opportunity to share our mission with the members of your civic group, religious organizations or book club. Please contact Leslie Komet Ausburn directly to arrange a time for one of our staff to come speak to your organization. However, if for some reason a staffer is unavailable, or if you would prefer to present the information yourself, we have a PowerPoint entitled “What is SAReads and Why Does It Matter?” available for your use.
